Character: Queen Tamír II of Atyion Fandom: The Tamír Trilogy by Lynn Flewellyn
History: There is a prophecy in the country of Skala, laid down centuries before under the warrior Queen Ghërilain I, spoken by the Oracle of Afra. It reads: So long as a daughter of Thalátimos' line defends and rules, Skala shall never be subjugated. After mad Queen Agnalain, generations past Ghërilain, began killing on whim, the people were relieved to have any other ruler - even if that ruler was male. The newly crowned King Erius took the place of his sister, Ariani, who according to tradition should have reigned. But any dissension was silenced, and women and girl children of royal blood were prone to lethal accidents. The implication was clear, yet it was spoken of only in whispers. As Erius reigned, war with Plenimar dragged on, long and bloody and vicious, and plagues broke out, widespread, in Skala. Droughts left fields fallow, and people starved.
But Ariani was spared death by the love of her brother the king, and married Duke Rhius. When she became pregnant, they retreated to Alestun for the birthing, and she had twins. A trusted old wizard, Iya, had received a vision from the Oracle of Afra - one saying that she must stand by Ariani's child no matter what, and keep her safe so that some day she might rule. That in mind, she enlisted the aid of a witch of the wilds, Lhel, who killed the male child, passing it off to the world as a stillborn. Using her arcane magic, she sewed flesh to flesh and made the female baby appear in all ways male, to ensure her safety until she could take up the crown.
That girl was given the male name Tobin, and from then on lived in the remote keep at Alestun. Ariani, his mother, went mad with grief, aware of the crimes that had been committed, and sewed dolls day and night - including one she'd sewn on the birthing bed, with the dead infant's bones stuffed within. The dead child haunted the keep, called only Brother, causing vicious accidents and attacking those complicit in its death. Finally Ariani committed suicide, jumping out of a high tower, and years later Rhius died in a doomed battle, sent by the wicked wizard Niryn, adviser to the king. Tobin was left an orphan with no idea of his destiny, or his true form. With his squire Ki as a close, trusted friend, and his father's guard captain Tharis to protect him, he set off for the capital Ero to join the crown Prince Korin's Companions, as was his birth right.
After training there for a few years and finding his place among the Companions, still haunted by Brother and the memory of his parents, blood appeared on Tobin's genitals. Fearing the absolute worst - that he'd caught the plague, and would infect the entire Palatine - he fled to the woods of Alestun, where Lhel found him and revealed the truth. She reinforced the spell that kept him as a male, and told him that the time had not yet come for him to take his true form.
Some time later, Plenimar invaded Ero, taking the nation by surprise. Elsewhere, at his true home and holdings of Atyion, Tobin released the spell that bound him to her brother's spirit and claimed her lineage before the entire city. With literal naked proof before their eyes, the people of Atyion pleged loyalty to her, and she marched back with her army to Ero to save the capital. But newly named Tamír was too late. King Erius was dead, the city razed to the ground, and Korin, as new king, had fled the city, Niryn spewing poisonous lies into his ears. Believing Tobin to be a crazed usurper, and worse, a traitor, he holed up in the remote northern keep of Cirna.
With the Companions, close as brothers, split by loyalty and war, it would take the fulfillment of a prophecy to unite Skala and save it from both Plenimar and itself.
Personality: As Tobin, he had been sad and quiet, burdened heavily with the dead. The only one that could draw humor from him was Ki, and so they held fast to each other from the instant they'd met. Tobin was raised in the isolated keep at Alestun, and although he knew the formalities to abide by in court, did not feel rank as keenly as most nobles did. He took great offense at anyone that tried to separate him from Ki because of their difference in rank, and although he didn't know the truth as he was growing, he knew that he wasn't attracted to girls. A virgin still, he had embarrassing thoughts of Ki at night. Men liking men was accepted in Skala, but Ki was straight as an arrow, and Tobin's unrequited feelings were an embarrassment between them.
Aside from his relationship with Ki, Tobin was a powerful warrior, holding fine skill with the sword and bow, and had a good head for history and strategy. Many remarked upon his talents, but his true gift was in fashioning jewelry. What began as a whimsical molding of wax ended with the finest jewelers and nobles in Ero clamoring for his designs. Beyond that, Tobin was strongly honorable, doing his duty to the end and thinking always of others. He spoke plainly to servants, thanking them kindly, and spared every effort to assuage others' suffering. When he was forced to discipline Ki with a whipping for fighting, it pained him enormously, and had to be convinced by Ki himself to do it.
Then Tobin became Tamír, and much changed. Still Tobin at heart, Tamír felt unsettled, uncomfortable in her body, and a wide gap sprung up between she and Ki. Though Tharin stood by her, steadfast as always, and nobles pledged allegiance to her cause, she ached to be with Ki and was thoroughly shamed because of it. Her language coarsened, and her no nonsense, rational attitude began to make itself known: as uncrowned queen, she directed those around her without hesitation, but with great compassion. She despaired of the conflict between she and Korin, and was extremely averse to the idea of civil war. Skalan fighting Skalan was horrific to her, and she sought first and foremost to care for her people as was her duty. Though secretly overwhelmed, Tamír rose to meet her destiny with grace and determination.
Other: That was a very rushed summary of Tamír's circumstances, and I left out entire arcs and important characters, but I'll spare you a soliloquy. As a note, I'll be taking her through the final book of the trilogy - hence the abrupt end of the history.
Additional Links:Natalie Dormer would be used for her icons. Also, here's a link to the final book on Amazon, just to prove that I'm not making it all up.
First Person: It's been said that the warrior queens of the past kept journals, or so Imonus tells me when I'm not overrun with supplicants. If such journals did exist, they were burned years ago during Erius's reign. No trace of their lives but tales of their battles remain, kept for studying strategy. I'd had no idea the golden tablet from the throne room still survived, but I'm unsurprised. It was in my dream, and the ghost of Tamír I, my namesake, appeared when I looked for it.
It's only now that I've come to realize the value in the stories Father and Arkoniel told me. Niryn tried to discount them when I spoke to him that time in the royal tomb, but his words were foul manipulations. Whatever secrets they've kept and whatever past sins they've done, Father would never allow me to be taught lies; he must have trusted Arkoniel. Yet it hurts to think of him watching me all those years, seeing breasts where there was a flat chest. I can't look at him now. It still angers me that he didn't tell me years ago, and Father I can't bear to think of.
Not much of a regal diary this is turning out to be, but I don't feel like a queen. I act as one for my people's sake, but hell if I know what I'm doing. If I'm to be an example, I'll try to be a good one. I want Skala to be proud of me. A monarch is disgraceful without that.
Third Person: [Prompt: family.] Brother haunted her still, the only member of kin left to her, discounting cousin Korin. The fate that lay between them was something she didn't dwell on, though as queen eminent she was sure she should. It was still too hard to think of, to imagine facing him on the field. Tamír had never bested him before, but she knew that she would have to if the time came to claim the throne forcibly.
It was most difficult to think of the future alone at night in her barren room. Ero was in shambles, and though she undoubtedly had the nicest room in the city, it was unthinkable conditions for a princess. But Tamír didn't care. She felt cold without Ki by her side, and she cast somber glances at the open doorway leading to her dressing chamber. Ki lay within, presumably asleep after his jaunt out, doing something she wasn't privy to. And that hurt. It hurt deeply, in ways she'd never asked for, wasn't ready for.
Tamír was a woman who didn't want to be one, didn't want the monthly bleed that came with it, the responsibility of bearing children for her issue, nor the immense weight that came with the fact that an entire nation's hopes were riding on her. But if being a woman meant having Ki, she could bear all of that gladly, as she'd done throughout her father's death and Lhel's terrible revelation. Though Ki hadn't been part of her secrets, he'd been part of her heart since they were children, and Tamír was sore with his absence.
Tharin had given her wise counsel, as he was apt to - they both needed time for their hearts to mend, to adjust to this circumstance. But the very same heart that supposedly needed time didn't grant her a moment's rest. The duty of her position, her fealty to Skala, pulled her unerringly in one direction, and although Ki had sworn time and again to stay by her side -
