Character: Gippal
Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2
Character Notes:
History:
A lot of Gippal's history is up for speculation: we don't know anything about him before he joined the Crimson Squad, including how he got that snazzy eyepatch. So. What we do know is that around the same time as the events of FFX (two years before his current point in canon), he joined the candidates for the Crimson Squad, an elite military group-type-thing; he'd apparently wanted to join the Crusaders (an organization of volunteer warriors that defend people from Sin,) but Al Bhed weren't allowed. Anyway, so with his teammates (whom someone should totally app) Baralai, Nooj, and Paine, he went through training; the final exercise required them to go into a cave called the Den of Woe. Inside the cave, Shuyin's spirit basically drove everyone crazy, and almost all of the candidates killed each other. Only Gippal's group survived.
When they got out, though, the officials in charge of the Squad tried to kill them. They escaped, only to have a still-possessed Nooj shoot his comrades.
A sphere you can find in the game shows that he was around for the destruction of the Al Bhed Home, and sometime between games he started the Machine Faction. Other than that, there's nothing really about what he did in the two years between games.
During FFX-2, he doesn't have a whole lot of scenes, but basically he ends up helping Yuna and the girls fight Vegnagun, this giant robot/bug/superweapon (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/File:Vegnagun.jpg), so that Shuyin can't use it to destroy Spira.

Bits of conversation in game suggest that he and Rikku go way back, whether his bit about them being "quite the couple" was true or not. Also, Brother doesn't like him; who knows how that came about (if he *did* date Rikku, it could be an overprotective older sibling thing.)

Personality:
Cocky Confident, a bit of a flirt, he actually seems like a fun guy to be around. A bit on the lazy side, maybe (see: his not actually bothering to interview Yuna and the girls for the dig.

Although, to be fair, anyone with a brain would know the three of them were capable.), and his underlings complain about him wandering off in-game, but he can be a leader if he has to. He kept the Faction neutral before and throughout the game- that had to take skill.

Someone over at the rp_advice_meme also pointed out something I hadn't really thought of at first- he was a soldier, he's seen some nasty things (see above)- he's not a total softy, even though he doesn't seem to take things too seriously.

Other:
This is probably better suited to the History section, but Gippal is an Al Bhed. Prior to the Eternal Calm, they were the target of racism and ostracism by pretty much the rest of Spira, since they don't follow the teachings of Yevon and continue to use machina (in FFX-2, Gippal and his Faction are calling them machines in order to get past the old stigma.)

Also, they have swirly pupils which should probably be biologically impossible (at least for humans.)

I'm playing him from after FFX-2, but I won't have him spoil the FFX cast here (other than maybe a "wtf, aren't you dead?" to Seymour- already talked to the mun.)

I played him here before, and I'll be using the same journal ([livejournal.com profile] likesbigguns), but I'll be resetting him.

For the record, I totally ship him and Rikku. XD it'd be nice if someone would app her...

Additional Links:
Final Fantasy Wiki's entry on him. (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Gippal)
Al Bhed translator. (http://www.pixelscapes.com/twoflower/albhed.html) I'm a dork and have it mostly memorized- it's a simple substitution code- but hey, this is probably relevant to your interests.

I admit I lifted a bit of this first-person sample from his old intro, and I'll be using it for his re-intro if I get back in.

First Person (entry type):

Dacdehk, dacdehk. Ec drec drehk fungehk? Cfaad.

Hey there, people! Looks like Shinra's spherenet thing is officially up and running. Now if only he'd explain what he was so excited about. Something about the knowledge of the worlds...

And worldwide, too! Gotta hand it to that kid: even I didn't think it would work. Craacr. E's zamuic uv y meddma get. Frana't ra kad rec pnyehc?

You should know me already, but the name's Gippal- remember it, 'cause I'm a very important man.

P.S. The Machine Faction will be interviewing people for the Bikanel dig again soon. If you're interested, come to Djose Temple.

((OOC: Translations- "Testing, testing. Is this thing working? Sweet." "Sheesh. I'm jealous of a

little kid. Where'd he get his brains?"))

Third Person: (This is set shortly before the events of FFX-2.)

Two years.

Had it seriously been two years already since the final exercise?

Today was the second anniversary of the ill-fated Operation Mi'ihen. Gippal had given the Faction members at Djose permission to go pay their respects if they wanted; most of them had taken him up on the offer. It seemed everyone knew someone who'd been killed in that fiasco. He'd thought about going with them; but going through Mushroom Rock Road would probably mean running into Nooj.

He didn't know if he wanted to deal with the Deathseeker. More likely, Nooj didn't want to deal with him. Even in all the Faction's dealings with the Youth League, Gippal had barely even seen him; it was like he was avoiding him. At any rate, it would all be so awkward, and that was something Gippal could do without.

He could have done without the reminder of two years ago, too, but there was no shortage of ways to distract himself from that, especially with so few people still at HQ to get in the way.

It would be nice if he and his teammates could be reunited sometime. Even Nooj- if only so they could find out why he betrayed them. It wasn't worth dwelling on, though. Time to get to work.

((Ugh, my writing style sucks. I hope I got the idea across, though... In the scene in the Bevelle Underground where the guys do finally meet up again, Gippal tries to stop Baralai and Nooj from arguing. It ends up with the three of them pointing guns at each other, but hey, he tried. XD so yeah, I figured if any of them would want them to be friends again, it'd be him.))
