Character: Shion Sonozaki Fandom: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
History: Shion is the younger of the Sonozaki twins, and was condemned to die at birth before her first bath. However, she was not killed, but instead looked down upon for the majority of her upbringing by the rest of the family. The only ones who were kind to her were Shion’s older sister, Mion, her uncle, and her caretaker Kasai. A few years before the beginning of the series, she was sent away to an all girls academy, where she stayed there for almost two years before escaping. She went to Okinomiya to live in an apartment with Kasai, and with the help of her uncle and Mion, was able to secure a part-time job at her uncle’s shop. However, her grandmother (the head of the Sonozaki family) soon found out that she had escaped boarding school and was currently looking for her. Shion then decided to stay low, but before that she went shopping. That was the fated day she was saved by Satoshi Hojou, the boy she quickly fell in love with. Even though he thought she was mion, Satoshi was kind to her, and Shion wanted to learn more about him.
Unfortunately, Satoshi was having trouble at home with his abusive aunt and uncle, as well as needing to take care of his younger sister Satoko. Shion began to grow bitter towards Satoko for being too much of a burden on Satoshi, and one day switched places with Mion in order to go to school. After seeing Satoko crying for her ‘nii-nii’, Shion snapped and began beating the shit out of the girl. However, she was stopped by the others. After that, she wished that Satoko and her aunt would be murdered as part of Oyashiro’s curse. She ended up revealing herself as Shion to Satoshi, and managed to get back on good terms with him. However, on the night of the Watanagashi festival, Satoshi disappeared, leaving Shion devastated. Before that, Shion was found out by her family for helping out Satoshi. Shion was then punished for her actions, which included falling in love with a Hojo. In order to spare the others who had helped her from being punished as well, Shion was forced to rip three of her own fingernails off.
In Watanagashi-hen and Meakashi-hen, Shion is the murderous one. She had gotten over Satoshi, but was reminded of him after coming across Keiichi Maebara in a similar fashion. She quickly starts going into a downward spiral of insanity as she looks up more information about Oyashiro’s curse, and comes to believe that it’s the Sonozaki family that was behind all the disappearances and murders. Most of the main characters are kidnapped and tortured, sometimes for information and sometimes just for the hell of it. Mion is locked up in a secret chamber, and Shion ends up taking her place most of the time. The village head is tortured and killed, Shion ends up killing her grandmother with a taser, drugs Rika and watches as the girl kills herself, tortures and murders Satoko, and almost tortures Keiichi. At the end, Shion kills Mion and briefly goes back to being herself, only to stab Keiichi as Mion and then die by falling off of her apartment’s balcony. Before she dies, she realizes what she has done, and promises Satoshi that things will be better the next time.
Shion’s appearance in the final arc, Matsuribayashi-hen, is a small one, but still critical. Instead of caring for Satoko, she is instead often seeing hanging around with Kasai. During the story’s climax, she helps out the group with Kasai by fending off a group chasing them. It almost appears that they both die, but end up living instead. Doctor Irie then shows Shion just what Satoshi’s fate was. Satoshi had been like Rena, and was at the stage of the curse where he began scratching his own throat out. Irie took him in, however, and saved him. However, Satoshi was in a coma, and hidden away without letting anyone know. Shion is relieved to see that he’s alive and promises to look after him from now on.
Personality: At first glance, Shion has a rather quirky personality, and is often seen with a carefree and yet mischievous personality. However, she is rather bipolar, and can quickly become angry or dead serious at the mention of Satoshi or Oyashiro-sama’s curse. She is a firm believer in Oyashiro, believing that his curse exists and that a demon has taken over her body. Even though her personality can grow violent up to the point of being purely sadistic, Shion believes that all of her actions have a righteous purpose, even if that isn’t necessarily the case. She killed everyone in order to get revenge for Satoshi, and couldn’t see that she had done anything wrong after screaming at her grandmother for being a pathetic idiot. Although she doesn’t have much respect for authority, which includes the police and her own relatives, Shion still holds a deep respect for her sister, whom she thinks of as being her best friend as well. She also has an almost fatherly respect for Kasai, even though she often teases him. Another point is that Shion can almost be seen as overly possessive, as she becomes infatuated with Satoshi after their first meeting and seems to make it her mission to get him to be happy. That obsessions carried through for another year, even though she suppressed her feelings until after Keiichi was in the picture.
Other: I will be taking her from the anime, not the game, and she will be switched out occasionally with Mion just to confuse everyone.

Haha! Sorry, sorry. Didn’t mean to confuse any of you much. You’ve probably figured out that I’m not Mion. My name is Shion Sonosaki, Mion’s younger twin sister. I hope you guys have been treating her well so far! Hey, Sis, if you end up reading this, we need to meet. Even with Kasai around, this apartment is just so boring. Hopefully that old hag won’t get her panties in a bunch if you sneak out for a few hours.
Third Person:
There was so much blood. It was everywhere; on the ground, the walls, even a few droplets on the ceiling. And yet Shion couldn’t stop laughing. This sensation of warm blood running down her skin was invigorating; she just couldn’t get enough of it. Even the sounds of the bodies hitting the ground after a long fall filled her with glee.
Still, somewhere deep down, this all seemed so wrong to her. Sure, she hadn’t grown up with these people as her sister had, but for the most part she had liked them. This wasn’t her own pleasure she was feeling. All she was doing was quenching this thirst of the demon inside her. But that wasn’t it. Shion was also making things right. She was avenging her beloved Satoshi-kun.
No matter what happened, no matter how many people had to die, everything would turn out right in the end. It had to.
